Student Transfer Guide to CPH



Our aim is to ensure that the transfer from another college to CPH is as seamless as possible and that you find yourself in the right year group for you.


Choosing the right Homeopathic Course


– With so many different courses available

– part-time, full-time, correspondence courses, online learning, distance learning, academic or vocational etc it's quite common for students to find the course they have chosen is not right for them.

Please be clear that each course is different in its approach, philosophy, teaching standards and resources. Do not assume that one course is the same as another! Many courses have started using ‘practical’ in their marketing without understanding what it actually means  – they confuse the terms ‘classical’ and ‘practical’ –  one is a method of prescribing and the other is an approach to learning and practice. This is leading to confusion in the minds of students and is also a symptom of their own confusion about what they are doing. CPH offers a totally different program – in structure, content, style of teaching and in the type of students who graduate – to other courses.

Academic courses are designed for those people who wish to learn about homeopathy and be assessed on their academic understanding of homeopathy – the assessment process is examination/test based and relies on you having a good memory for regurgitating information. It does not teach you how to apply that information in the real world.

This style of education often leads to students being treated as children, overloaded with information and feeling confused, dispirited and a very high dropout rate, both before graduation and after as the students are just not ready to practice in the real world. (Increasingly we are getting graduates with a degree applying to join CPH and we have to put them back in our foundation year in order to get them up to speed to be able to practice!).

At CPH we believe this approach is a very outdated way to learn to be a professional practitioner – human beings learn naturally by observation, application and then they seamlessly assimilate what they have learned. A lecture about the remedy Nat mur (common salt) means little to a student it tends to goes in one ear and come out the other. Passing a test on Nat mur still doesn’t mean you understand Nat mur as a remedy.


However when a lecturer has the time to explain the links between the stress hormones and elevated salt levels in the system, why this remedy will come up as a major grief remedy and will also show up when people abuse steroids or take the contraceptive pill – it is even more exciting when you are seeing different patients presenting a Nat –mur state and you start using the remedy in different ways because you understand the cause of their symptoms be it grief, or drug toxicity , then and only then do you learn Nat mur as a remedy. This will stay with you forever and you will know when/ why/ how to prescribe it as a remedy to get the best results for your patients.


This is why we focus on how you use information and why a lot of our students graduate with practises already up and running before students from other colleges are even allowed to take a case. Training at the CPH clinic is unique in how closely it involves students with real patients. The presentation and discussion of cases is paced to suit the student's growing abilities and also to give a very hands on experience of what it is like to be in a busy practice.

Our students not only take cases but also prescribe remedies (under supervision) as long as they can justify why they have chosen a particular method and remedy. A wide range of clinical experience matures a student very quickly and helps give them the confidence to start in practice with a wide range of cases.


A full pharmacy is available at the clinic. CPH is very different from other colleges as we provide a genuine alternative vocational approach to the training of homeopaths – what does this mean to you as a student practitioner – from a CPH perspective this means every lecture that you go to has a set of comprehensive notes which you download from our web site and which you can read about your lecture before you come to class and formulate questions to bring to the lecture. (This comprehensive, high quality material will provide an unrivalled set of reference material for use in practise for the rest of your career and is unique to CPH) 

– the lecturer focuses on how you use that information 

– class work is based on the use of the information assignments are designed to help you go back in to the notes and use them . Some lectures are recorded verbatim and go into our lecture library and students can get a copy if they wish. The class sizes are small so that we can support students on a very individual level

– to make sure that they are not falling behind or are confused.  Your assignments require you to take cases so that we can see you understand the many different ways of using homeopathy.

We also teach you the appropriate use of flower essences, nutrition, herbal tinctures and alternative diagnostic tools such as iridology because we know that these are invaluable tools to help you gain maximum results for your patients. A training at CPH focuses on case analysis and a clear understanding of the different methods that have been developed over the last 200 years.


Our focus of attention when teaching student’s homeopathy is not on how much information you can retain but how you use that information. In this age of information overload one of the essential key skills to learn is how to access information easily and quickly as and when needed.

Homeopaths learn best by being homeopaths so we encourage you to apply what you have learned and all our assessments are based around patients and relevant cases

– from the anatomy, physiology and pathology to the materia medica it is all integrated. If you learn these things out of context from a text book they will mean nothing to you except disparate information

– At CPH we pride ourselves on teaching our students to think for themselves, make the necessary links to help you to analyse your patients case. Bearing this in mind you will be able to see that that the years completed on another homeopathic course may not necessarily translate into the same year group or level at CPH.

If you are interested in transferring to CPH then you will need to discuss this in depth with Ellen Kramer, our Course Director. She will give you an overview of what has been covered in the years you have studied at another college. You will have to show what you have covered and at what depth in your training so far.

It is important to compare your time table with CPH to see how much of our training you have missed so we can discuss what is best for you. Our experience shows that most students need to repeat at least one year i.e. if they have completed 2 years on another course they are often not ready to move into our 3rd year.

If you feel you are ready to move into the next year group then you must demonstrate that you are ready to do so by submitting one of your own cases (following our guide lines for case presentation) and one of our methods paper cases from the year group that do not want to repeat.

These  will be sent to one of our external markers and feedback will be sent to you as part of our meeting to asses which year group you should join. There will be a fee of £20 for this (as we have to pay the markers). We also strongly recommend you visit the college and sit on classes before you decide to apply. You are welcome to come to our discovery days to find out for yourself what a vocational training will mean to you. This is because of the emphasis we place on practical application of what you are learning in theory and differences in teaching methods.


CPH courses differ in the following way:

  • The emphasis of the training is on case analysis.

  • The structure of the training – CPH provides a unique integrated program that is designed around the human body, e.g. when you study the cardiovascular system you will start with learning about the anatomy physiology & pathology; then we introduce allopathic and alternative approaches, homeopathic therapeutic remedies, the main heart remedies, nutrition and herbs that will support homeopathic treatment, observational skills for the heart to link the whole system. Student progress is assessed through an AP&P assignment, a methods paper case etc. Students then move onto the next body system and so on.

  • Support material – CPH is the only college to provide a comprehensive and complete set of notes. All lecture notes can be down loaded electronically from our web site at least one week before your lecture so that you can read the notes and formulate questions before the lecture. This allows us to cover twice as much information in our time table then the ordinary methods of teaching.

  • The lectures – the tutor will give you an overview of the notes and how they use this information in practice – everything they teach will be in the notes. They will not cover the notes verbatim and will bring to the lecture different styles of using the information.

  • Information Management – we do not expect students to learn everything in the notes but we do expect students to use the notes for reference when they see their own patients. We show them how to store the notes in a way that suits them for future use. Much of what is in the notes cannot be found in current homeopathic books and come out of CPH clinical experience.

  • Assessments – We do not do exams or tests but use continual assessments which take the form of Assignments, Methods paper cases and your own personal cases as part of your clinical work. We give two types of marks 'PASS' (this means that you have demonstrated that you understand what you have learned and can apply this to cases)  or REVIEW  – (please note a REVIEW is not a failure but an opportunity to keep learning until you understand  what you are doing). We encourage students to compare themselves to themselves and acknowledge their own growth and understanding because we recognise that learning to become a homeopath is a very individual process.
